Those of us who have been playing golf for any length of
time understand that is more than just a game. There's no
denying that golf instills certain physical attributes and
that it's good exercise but there's more to it than that,
and most golfers that I know would wholeheartedly agree.
That extra component that golf offers its players is a set
of life skills that serve us daily--whether we know it or
not. This holds true for new golfers as well as they begin
to learn the game and appreciate its overall value not just
on the course but in life in general.

But golf isn't like basketball or soccer or baseball when it
comes to our younger players. Kids who want to play but
don't have the resources to buy the needed equipment or
mentors to teach them the game are pretty much left out. The
truth is golf can be horribly expensive, even at the junior
level.

So what can the average Joe do about this?

That depends on how much you want to do.

If you live a metro area, chances are there are mentoring
programs already in place. A call or visit to one might lead
you into taking personal, active action by becoming a
mentor. If you don't have the time or feel as if you don't
have the skills to teach others, perhaps you can do other
things to help the program. More on this below.

If you live a rural area or an area that simply doesn't have
a golf mentor program at all, well, consider creating your
own mentoring program. You don't have to be a pro to teach a
youngster the fundementals of the game. Schedule a chat with
your course manager and discuss the idea with him or her and
see if you can't work something out.

If you're not the mentoring type, consider donating to a
program. Many golfers (at least the ones I know) have old
clubs and bags sitting in their garages that they will never
use again. Why let them gather dust and spider webs? Give
them to a program of your choice and let someone else enjoy
them. Even if you only have a few old clubs (meaning less
than a full set, or even an old putter or driver)...donate
it/them.

Frankly, I think it's something of a shame that kids who
can't afford clubs or have no one to teach them this game
are left out. It doesn't have to be that way, and you could
be the one to change that in your community.

from a new high school graduate to a seasoned adult player

industry area, such as management, landscape architecture,

Those that get a degree from an accredited college can take
a position in professional management, managing a public
course or private country club. Others positions abound,

Colleges that only focus on the sport offer Associate's
degrees in operations and management with a focus on Golf
Professional or General Management. These two paths could
lead you to become a golf pro at a public or private course,
or you could manage the entire course, including the food
and beverage aspect. Specialized colleges offer these types
of degrees. Just make sure you find an accredited university
that offers the curriculum and subjects you know will be
advantageous to your future career.

In your search for an institution, don't overlook those with
general management majors. You can also receive a Bachelor's
degree in areas like Applied Management with an emphasis in
the sport. Many parks- and recreation-related Bachelor's
degrees also have an emphasis option, offered at state
universities as well. Another option for a Bachelor's degree
is in sports-related majors, like Sports Science or Sports
Management. Within this degree many colleges offer a
Professional Golf Management specialization. For a
Bachelor's degree, you not only have to finish the required
courses, but you must also pass the PGA's Playing Ability
Test.

Whatever the program, basics about the theory and practice
of shop operations will be covered, as will teaching methods
and rules of the game. Country club management is generally
also covered as well as service-oriented classes. Most of
the Associate's degrees are completed within 16 straight
months, with summer terms included. An internship must also
be completed, and students are encouraged to do multiple
internships at different facilities to help them decide on a

PGA professionals (up to five times per week) and green

To get into a golf college, you must fill out an application
and submit an application fee, which can cost anywhere from

transcript, many colleges require a letter from a high

standard is to accept those with a handicap of 8 or better.

Son For Junior Golf?

You'd be surprised at the number of school students who play
golf. Of the 36 million people in the US aged five and over,
who have played at least one round, six million of them are
under 17 years old and still at school.

These are our 'junior golfers', the five to 17 year olds who
are a fast growing segment of the golf market. They have the
same interest in golf that we do, but different equipment
and training needs.

Take the easy one: equipment. Junior golfers should have
proper junior golf clubs.

The day has long gone when I could cut down the shaft of one
of my old adult clubs to a length to fit my son's height --
and think I had set him up for golf. That may have worked
fine 20 years ago. But club design and materials have made
big advances since then and there is now a wide range of
high quality junior golf clubs, golf sets and clothing that
will fit the height and build of younger players exactly
right and make their golf more enjoyable. Also, cutting down
one of my old clubs gives the junior the thicker part of the
club and this may make it difficult to get a proper grip.

The putting green is the best place to introduce kids to
golf by putting. Once an "understanding" is developed, close
to the green chipping should be introduced. As the junior
golfers get farther away form the green pitching will be
introduced and finally the full swing. Sooner or later the
junior golfers will want to play a round. Many parents, as

"personal par" will be for every hole you will be playing.

5. Make the putting green the goal. This is a good way

reads only count the shots that it takes to get to the green
to determine a score.

6. The hole does not need to be the end of the hole.
What does this mean? Some smaller juniors find it more fun
to hit it into a bunker than onto a green. This may seem
counter-intuitive to many golf purists however, once you
think about it, typically the bunkers are smaller than the
putting greens. This can only make them better later. In
addition, they LOVE to climb into the bunkers and this gives
us a chance to teach bunker etiquette.

7. Keep the game fun at all costs!!! Keep a junior golf
journal to continue the fun at home as well as build
memories that can be looked upon forever. With so many
activities available to our young people, their interest may
come and go. However, by keeping it fun they will always
come back to golf.
