Callaway PGA Junior Tour – Benefits of the Callaway PGA

Junior Tour

Do you have a child who loves playing golf and would like to
take their game to the next level? Are you looking for a way
to introduce them to competitive tour golf? Welcome to the
Callaway PGA junior tour! Designed to encourage children to
follow their golfing dreams and giving them the structure
and environment to hone their skills for tournament golf.

The tour was established for boys and girls age 13-18, and
introduces young people to the fundamentals of competitive
golf. Through their participation they will learn the rules
of golf, golf etiquette, equipment knowledge and general
instructions while competing with junior golfers from around
the world. They will also have the opportunity to learn what
it is like to be interviewed by the media from television,
radio and newspaper reporters. Junior golfers will
experience a real tournament atmosphere as they compete in
"contestants only" roped-off golf courses, normally taking
between 4 to 4 1/2 hours to complete.

The Callaway PGA Junior tour sponsors more than 1,650 events
in 41 different sections each year, allowing junior golfers
to gain plenty of experience while building great
relationships and contacts with fellow golfers as well as
PGA tour professionals. The tour does not require any
association membership fees, but participation can be
invaluable as your child's scores and profile are available
to be sent to College and University coaches across the
country, making them eligible to receive golf scholarships.
It is also a great way for them to build their golf resume!

The Callaway PGA junior tour began in 1996 and has since
provided many college scholarships to junior golfers wanting
to take their game to a higher level. Organized and operated
by the PGA tour of America, the junior tour is directly
supported by PGA professionals who are very active in
promoting opportunities for children to learn and grow in
the golfing community. Junior golfers are expected to
maintain a high degree of conduct and be neat in appearance
and personal grooming. They must be willing to comply with
the rules of the Callaway PGA junior tour.

The season begins in May and continues through September,
with events at more than 12 courses throughout the country.
Event rates are very inexpensive, allowing your child to
compete at the most efficient level. Junior tour members are
also eligible for membership in the American Junior Golf
Association which can expose them to even more effective
training as well as the opportunity to win awards and honors
in local, regional and national levels. If this sounds like
the type of environment you would like to get your child
involved in, you can apply online. They look forward to
hearing from you and working to help your child build a
great golfing future!

The Future Of Junior Golf

In the not too distant past, the game of golf gave the
impression it was only for the rich and elite groups of the
community. Golf professionals more or less created their
skills on their own, without consistent help at an early
age. Sheer drive, ambition and a certain level of natural
ability were the main keys to become successful.

Today?s it has all changed. Children have much more support,
availability of play and instruction than ever before. These
kids are jumping at the chance. Studies have shown that over
6 million juniors between 5 to 17 years of age have either
played a round of golf or visited a golf practice facility.
That is an incredible number when compared to just a few
years ago.

Opportunities for the children with visions for a
professional golf career are many. No longer are kids
serving as caddies to learn the sport, or simply hanging
around the golf course and driving range, learning on their
own. There?s schools like the International Junior Golf
Academy where students develop their skills as a golfer for
tournament play as well as receive academic training and
learn basic skills for life. Learning professional quality
skills at young ages can only create more powerful and
focused adult players.

Two programs offered by the Tiger Woods Foundation called
Start Something and In the City Clinics are helping to make
golf available to kids who otherwise would have no
opportunity to learn the game, or the life skills that
produce a focused and productive adult.

If you?re the parent of a youngster with an interest in
golf, there are some things to keep in mind as your child
investigates the sport. Most importantly for motivation,
allow your child to have the right to choose whether or not
to participate. Nothing will motivate a child more than the
sense of investment that comes in choosing his/her own
activities.

Secondly, remember the phrase ?It is not whether you win or
lose that?s important, but how you play the game?. Results
are important, but it is important for your child?s overall
development progress to reinforce the efforts made.
Encouragement and acknowledgement for the efforts your child
is making will go far to assure positive and motivated
events in your child?s life.

Odd Balls

If you play golf long enough you'll find that some of the
unlikeliest events on the course aren't actually that
unlikely. The odds, for example, of two balls coming to a
rest in a bunker touching each other are slim-but
nonetheless real. The official rulebook, published by the
USGA and R & A, may be a tedious read, but it is
invaluable in helping players-even on the professional
level-succeed and avoid the hazard of embarrassment in
unusual situations.

Two golf balls resting together

Because bunkers often have a low point, two balls hit into
the bunker may actually touch. Rule 22-the same rule that
allows for marking a ball on the putting green-permits you
to mark a ball anywhere on the course. Be aware, however, of
a couple of differences between what you may do on the green
and elsewhere on the course. Cleaning the ball is restricted
to the putting green. Marking and picking up the ball on the
course at will is not allowed; you must be asked to pick it
up by the affected player. After the first ball is hit, the
marked ball must be replaced with as close to the same lie
as possible that it had before it was marked. In a bunker,
that would likely mean that the bunker would be raked before
replacing the ball.

Two balls collide

Rule 15 covers hitting the wrong ball. If someone hits the
wrong ball, he or she gets a penalty of two strokes, and
must go play his or her own ball. The player whose ball was
hit should replace his or her ball.

I learned first-hand an interesting exception to this rule.
During a tournament, I hit a ball into a lateral water
hazard. Because it was in the tall grass just short of the
water, I was able to play the ball. Or so I thought. I soon
discovered that the ball I hit was another player's lost
ball. So I found my ball, hit it out, and finished the hole.
I was clueless about the relevant rules. One of the guys in
the group said I should be disqualified, but I was relieved
that another fellow player knew rule 15 and its exception:
If the ball is in a hazard, you can't touch the ball or the
ground, making it potentially impossible to identify your
ball. Therefore, if you hit the wrong ball from a hazard,
there is no penalty.

Tiger Woods's boulder move

Regulations on the game of golf are not limited to the
rulebook. Decisions that have been made by officials have
been compiled into Decisions on the Rules of Golf. This book
is placed on equal footing with the rulebook. Rule 23 states
that loose impediments, such as rocks that aren't embedded
in the ground, may be moved, assuming the player is not in a
hazard. Tiger's boulder at the 1999 Phoenix Open was a loose
impediment-but it was far too large for him to move by
himself. The question became: Who can help move a loose
impediment?

According to the USGA, Decision 23-1/3 came about in 1956
when a female player in Scotland was unable to move a fallen
tree by herself, and others came to her aid. Although
unquestionably legitimate, the officials' decision to allow
aid for Tiger to move the large rock was somewhat
controversial. For some people, Tiger became an illustration
of how a good knowledge of the rules is beneficial. Others
thought that while Tiger followed the letter of the rules,
he violated the spirit of the rules.

Lee Janzen's unfortunate mistake?

Shortly before teeing off for the third round of the 2001
U.S. Open, officials told Lee Janzen that he wouldn't be
playing; he had missed the cut because he was being assessed
a two-stroke penalty from the day prior. A rain delay had
cut his first round short, so he marked his ball in the
middle of the fairway. When he returned to the spot the next
morning, Lee mopped up some water with a towel before he
replaced his ball. Tampering with the lie in this manner
warrants a two-stroke penalty, but no one informed Lee. He
signed the scorecard and was happy to make the cut by one
stroke. While the officials decided they wouldn't disqualify
him despite his erroneous scorecard, they did assess the
two-stroke penalty the rules demanded. The effect was the
same, as the penalty put him beyond the cut line. I can only
imagine what it would be like to step foot into the third
round of the U.S. Open only to discover that you've missed
the cut. (I suppose for his paycheck, I could learn to
cope.)

Odd situations on the golf course such as these should
prompt players to learn the rules beforehand. Consider
carrying a rule book in your golf bag-if you don't need it
to look up technicalities, you can use it to nod off for a
nap at the game's end.

Golf Sponsorship and Corporate

With the rising popularity for the sport, advertisers are
not too far behind when it comes to teeing off! Yes! There
has been a remarkable increase in the number of sponsors
playing an integral role in Golf. Basically, sponsors are
involved in three different tiers:

1. They sponsor the sporting event 2. They sponsor players
3. They sponsor specific things like the players clubs,
travel, stay etc.

One of the biggest sponsors of Golf is HSBC. In fact, HSBC
even has its own golf tournament called the HSBC
Championships. There were two recent events, one in Shanghai
and the other in Wentworth. In the Shanghai HSBC golf
championship event, Phil Mickelson, the current World number
two won the Championship as he edged out his English fellow
golfers Lee Westwood and Ross Fisher with a birdie at the
second hole in a sudden death play off. This was the first
overseas title in almost 14 years for Mickelson.

On the other hand the Wentworth golf championship was won by
Ernie Els, the South African star. He won the HSBC World
Match Play title and this was for the 7th time and he beat
US Open champion Angel Cabrera 6 & 4 in the 2007 final.

The great thing is that Golf is growing in popularity so
rapidly that corporate sponsors from all across the world
are eagerly queuing up. Another new golfing event being
sponsored by HSBC is the women's HSBC Champions tournament.
Top women golfers from across the world teed-off in the
inaugural tournament that took place at the Tanah Merah
Country Club in Singapore. The competition was held from
February 28-March 2, 2008 and drew lots of fans as well as
other sponsors. The prize was worth a whopping $2 million
for this LPGA-sanctioned tournament and is considered to be
the richest event in Asia where the first prize is worth
$300,000.

HSBC has moved on from the women's golf tournament to Junior
golf tournament. Now this is what the crux of the matter
really is. Golf has transformed so much as a sport that now
it is being seen as a career opportunity especially when you
can start early. Known as the HSBC Wee Wonders
Championships, this golfing event was started in 1995. It is
dedicated to the juniors and provides a huge opportunity and
platform for boys and girls between the age of five and
twelve to make progress from amateur competitions to
competitive or pro-golf.

The Juniors competition revolves around playing on Par 3
Golf courses in what is called the 'flag format'. The
juniors get around 36 odd shots to get as far as they can
around the course. Wherever the ball stops, they can plant
their flag. So Golfing is a fun sport for children but then
that is how the interest for the sport can be created. There
are some professional companies like Pro-Launch who not only
help children as well as men to get into pro golf but also
get them sponsorships from corporate.

Selecting the right golf shoe is not as easy as simply

6 Tips On How To Play Better Golf

Golf is beautiful game with a simple objective, drive the
ball into the hole. But as simple as this goal is, carrying
it out well enough to be a champion is not simple or easy.
Except you know what it takes to be a master golfer.

So here are some tips to help you lay better golf:

Prepare Both Mental and Physic

If you are not prepared to play mentally and physically, you
won?t be at your best. So anytime you have any golf game at
hand do whatever it takes to get you prepared, make sure
prepare yourself both mentally and physically, winning
starts in the mind but is carried out physically by the
body. Both must be well pared to be at your best.

Know Your Clubs

The golf club is very important in the game of golf. If you
are really interested in enjoying your game, you must know
your clubs well. It?s in knowing your club that you know
your swing and how to direct your drives.

Study Your Course

Just important as the clubs in the game of golf is the golf
course. Great players are those who take time to study their
course. Knowing your course has the advantage of letting you
know where to avoid in the course and where to focus your
drives. When you know your course well, you know where the
trouble spots are and how to avoid it. This helps you to
play better golf because you will be having a nice game.

Don?t Let Other Player Intimidate You

To be your best at the game you must never allow the people
you are playing against to intimidate you . No matter how
good they are, don?t let their track records intimidate you,
if you do you will lose focus. Make sure your focus is on
the game, playing your best and not at your opponents what
they have done in the past. ?Here and now is what matters?
should be what you should keep telling yourself. You will be
surprised how beatable these people are when you don?t allow
them to intimidate you.

Practice swinging your hands

You?ll mostly use your hand In game of golf. You should have
it well exercised and prepare them ready for the game. Some
golfer might think since golf is a less physical sport than
football, basketball and the likes, exercise is not needed.
It?s misconception. If you want to have powerful and perfect
swings, your hands must be ready before the game even
starts. Swinging is a good exercise to help achieve this.
Practice swinging your hands as a good exercise to set your
muscles ready for those great drives. After all the game is
in getting the swing right.

Do Swing Correctly

If you want to play golf game at your best, you should get
your swing right. Basically there are six parts to a swing
in golf. These are: back swing, take-away, correct posture
and position, the correct alignment of the golf club, impact
and the follow through. Getting this right will guarantee
perfect swings during the game and help you play better
golf.

Golf Bags – A Look At The Different Types And Styles

There must be thousands of types, styles, colors, makes and
models of the simple golf bag. They are made by the well
known giants like Nike, Callaway, Ping, Titleist, Wilson,
Cleveland, Taylor Made and the specialty golf bag companies
like Ogio, Sixron, Mizuno, Sun Mountain, Benetti, Datrek and
more. And all you wanted to do was find someplace to put
your clubs.

But, before looking at the many golf bag manufacturers, take
a moment to decide what golf bag best fits the way you play
golf.

If you are a walker and enjoy strolling your favorite golf
course, consider a Carry Bag. They are lightweight and most
often made of plastic, nylon or even canvas. They can handle
your basic golf clubs and your balls, tees and a towel. They
often come with a stand that keeps your clubs upright when
you are making a shot. Golf Carry bags were introduced in
the early 1980s when Sun Mountain introduced the first bag
with legs that automatically extended when it was set down
on the ground.

These days, the cart bag is probably the most popular golf
bag. A bit too bulky to carry, it fits nicely on a hand
pushed cart frame or the back of a golf cart. The cart golf
bag is large enough to hold all your clubs, shoes, towels
and all the other accessories that are so helpful out on the
golf course. They can be carried in a pinch, but a strong
back is a definite requisite.

The third option is called a staff bag. These are carried by
the professionals and people who want to have every
imaginable club (up to the allowable 14 club limit) and
anything else the golfer might want to carry on his or her
round. We are usually in caddy territory here.

These days many golfers take their clubs on golf vacations
and sometimes even on business trips. The golf travel bag
has fast become another popular golf bag option. The soft
bag is good when traveling by car. It is usually lighter and
more compact. The carry bag is a good option here.

However when an airplane is part of the itinerary, a hard
golf travel bag is a must. The hard shell case bag protects
your clubs from being damaged. But they fit nicely on your
golf cart when you arrive. These golf bags are considered
luggage and not recommended when walking the golf course.
However, they are an absolute must when packing your clubs
for the airport. Nothing can ruin a golfing vacation more
than a broken or bent set of golf clubs.

Golf bags also come in different shapes and sizes with these
categories. Ladies and junior golfers certainty have
different weight and size requirements than the men.

One can also easily find discount and used golf bags online
or at your local pro shop.

The absolute best place to shop for golf bags is online.
With a few mouse strokes you can visit many different
Internet stores, do your research and find the bag that
absolutely meets your unique golf bag criteria and even
color. You can also find used golf bags on sites like E-bay
and there are always special sales and ever present discount
offers. In some cases, they can be downright cheap. The avid
golfer can even find individual customized golf bags. It's
all online.

For many golfers, one bag isn't enough. Many enthusiastic
golfers own two or three so they will have the perfect bag
for the perfect round.

Find a Golf Tournament For Everyone

Many golf players have played golf for many years and have
never had the pleasure of playing in a golf tourney. As
popular as they are becoming, World Golf Tournaments are
being played more and more each year. As a way to get and
keep young people interested in the game of golf, the golf
association has created the junior golf tournaments. Because
of his age and style, Tiger Woods is responsible a lot for
the interest that young people are exhibiting in golf and
learning more about the game.

There are many types of major golf tournaments throughout
the United States. Although some may be costly to certain
individuals, the Professional Golf Association (PGA)
sponsors many tournaments for anyone interested. They are
publicized well in advance, giving people ample notice to
prepare and register. The PGA, known for giving the very
best in prizes, has four major golf competitions. They are
played every year with different courses being chosen each
year to add to the competition and championship's fun.

Some of the major events are the Masters, the U.S. Open,
British Open, President's Cup and the Ryder Cup. Augusta,
Georgia is the site for the Masters, which takes place every
fourth years. This event is a highly regarded golf even that
was started by Bobby Jones. The Ryder Cup is a major golf
tournament that takes place every other year, as does the
President's Cup. What makes the Ryder Cup a great event is
that golfing teams from the United States and Europe are the
competitors.

Although this is a known fact already, competing in golf is
not just for men anymore. This is a fact made very evident
by the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) with
their sponsored tournaments. The important golf tournaments
such as Ladies European Tour, Ladies Senior Tour and the
Futures Tour have been around a few years and are gaining
more popularity each year. Young girls just starting
learning the game of golf have the opportunity to practice
their game with the hopes of getting into one of these great
events.

One goal of the LPGA in recent years has been to make them
as well known as the men's tournament. One way they are
trying to accomplish this is in making their first place
prize such an award that it will be not only phenomenal, but
widely publicized and acknowledged worldwide.

Many companies as well as individual have fundraisers by
sponsoring a golf tournament or using the tourney as a way
to bring in money for charities. Whether you are interested
in participating in a golf tournament for cash, prizes or
just fun, there are many ways you can find their location.
Many golf tournaments are in your local newspapers. The
internet is another place where you may be able to find any
tournaments listed in large or small towns. Check early so
you have time to register in these great competitions.

The Keys to Junior Golf Success

As a golf performance coach, I've seen many changes in the
junior golf world over the past twelve years. The main
difference is in the level of competition. The popularity of
junior golf has made it far more challenging to get
scholarships to colleges for golf. At one point, not too
long ago, good grades and the ability to post 80 could get
you into plenty of good schools (especially girls).

Not the case anymore.

Junior golf has become fiercely competitive. The vast
majority of the kids I work with do not have the luxury of
spending years at the top golf school academies. This can
sometimes make them feel discouraged, as if they don't stand
a chance against the "privileged" kids.

I am quick to teach them that there are plenty of good
instructors all over the country, even at small local
courses.

Plus, there are three key areas where they can often make up
a tremendous amount of ground on the kids with all the
monetary advantages.

1) The mental game - The pros estimate that their success is
60-90% mental. The same goes for junior golf. I specialize
in alternative methods such as energy psychology, NLP and
hypnosis.

2) Golf Fitness - A workout designed specifically for golf
and the individual golfer is crucial for long term success.
Seek out a professional trainer who trains golfers as
athletes and performs a through assessment before designing
a fitness program.

3) Nutrition - proper food and drink before and during a
round will ensure sustained energy and focus. While the
other kids are eating fast food and guzzling sodas, those
with an optimal diet will always be prepared for peak
performance.

While good swing instruction and dedicated practice are
essential, the above three keys to junior golf success can
go a long way to leveling the playing field for all of our
kids.
