Score Awards Truly a Celebration of Canadian Golf

Last Monday night I was invited to attend the 26th Annual
Score Golf Awards at the majestic Eagles Nest Golf and
Country Club just north of Toronto. It was truly a great
night, and a night full of celebration for all great things
in the Canadian game. The awards themselves represent the
best in the country at the Junior Amateur, National Amateur
and National Senior Amateur levels and for both genders.
There is also an award for Superintendent, Club Professional
and Club Manager of the year. There is also the premier
award of the evening the Male and Female Tour Professional
of the Year. Lorie Kane and Stephen Ames were the worthy
recipients of each of these awards and to make a great
evening even better Ames actually attended. Alberta was very
well represented with the Club Professional Mr. Ron Laugher,
the Club Manager from Willow Park and of course Calgary
native now Stephen Ames.

The evening itself had a first class dinner, in a splendid
setting, and the quality of speeches was surprisingly and
refreshingly quite good. The evening was also a great
opportunity to network with many great industry leaders of
the game, the head of the RCGA President Garry West, and the
head of the CPGA Mr. Warren Crosbie were both present and
World Golf Hall of Famer Marlene Streit was a delight to see
and is always a pleasure to talk to. It really was a most
memorable night and it appears that Canadian golf has a
great deal to be proud of and also to look forward to.

This week our National Amateur teams are training and
preparing for the Amateur events that start the domestic
part of our season. We are in Toronto, and have worked out
and been tested physically and encouragingly our teams have
worked and have really improved this aspect of their games.
It is a huge factor in our ever improving display at events
around the world. Our fitness, mental management and
techniques are becoming far stronger and allowing our
players to really compete at the World level. The teams,
both men and women were also involved in a media day at the
very pristine Beacon Hall GC. Beacon Hall will also host the
3rd Copas De Las Americas and as part of the media day both
teams were announced that will attempt to defend the trophy.

Canada has won the last two events and with home field
advantage it is expected that both the men and women's team
respectively, will compete against the best teams from the
US, Mexico, Colombia and Argentina to name but a few.

The Canadian Men's team is represented by Lethbridge
resident Kris Wasylowich who continues to impress with low
numbers around Paradise Canyon almost on a daily basis. He
will be joined by the Quebec player Kevin Fortin Simard. On
the women's team Stephanie Sherlock from Barrie Ontario will
be teamed with veteran Laura Matthews who has been an
integral part of the last two winning teams.

The event is held every two years and with Puerto Rico, and
Mexico having hosted over the past 4 years, Canada with
Beacon Hall will host a great event over an amazingly tough
track. Having played a few different courses in this area of
Ontario it appears that several sites could have been
selected, there are so many great venues and all seem to be
in wonderful shape.

As we finish off our training this week with some club
fitting and testing, courtesy of our sponsors Titleist and
Adidas Taylor-Made, our women's team head east to Britain
for the British Amateur championships. On Tuesday during the
media day we were greeted by not unlikely British
conditions, the other difference is that at the British
Amateur we will not be quitting after 6 holes due to the
cold!

How To Choose The Proper Golf Equipment For Your Junior

Golfer

There are a lot of different junior golf items that are good
to getting a junior started in golfing. Before the junior
can begin to play the sport, they need to be well ready for
what the game has for them. There are many different clubs
and pieces that are used throughout a game of golf, either
to make sure that the junior playing can make the right
choice to golfing, or just in order to get the junior to
play the game at all. Golf is a very fun activity for
anyone looking to play the game. The golf world can be very
competitive.

When a player is more stable and ready for their first game
of golf, both mentally and physically, it is most likely
that they will rise in the sport rather quickly. Preparation
helps one out in getting ready for the game. Kids can be
especially aware about their level in the sports they are in
, which is why it can be helpful for the parents teaching
these kids to golf to show them how their clubs work and
help them learn the basic steps to becoming a golfer.

There are some pieces of junior golf that will seem obvious
to you, and other items that might seem less of a need. Of
course, a person will need the right set of clubs and balls.
These are the basic things needed to start out a junior
golfer. In addition, it will be very helpful for juniors to
have their own bag, so they can carry around all the
equipment that they will need on the course. One of the
best investments that a junior or golfer can use on and off
the course is a bag with wheels. Even junior clubs can get
to be heavy at times, and a junior will be able to move
their equipment around a lot easier if the bag has wheels on
it so they can get from hole to hole. This will also limit
the amount of injuries sustained on the course as the junior
will not be having to lug all their clubs around they can
simply just wheel it to the next hole.

Also, other great pieces can be golf socks or pieces of
light clothing. The socks are used to be placed on the head
of the club to keep them shiny and from getting scratched
and worn. There are also types that can be placed to tell
you which club is which.

For the player, having the light type of clothing and shoes
is important in order to make sure that they are comfortable
in the area in which they are playing. This is because many
people will play bad when they are not stable.

Orange Bowl Jr Golf Tournament – The League Forecasts A

Record Setting Show

The event tees off on Friday and the weathermen have a
favorable forecast in store for everyone. Last year saw
stiff competition among the top three contenders in the
female division (13-15). Melissa Rice and Amy Yardley, the
Breckenridge sophomores faced tough competition from each
other behind the eventual winner and the junior from the
Salt Valley, Jamie Foster-King. Salt Valley took the double
honors with another junior named Jonathan Hong emerging
victorious in the male version. He scored the record best
finish ever at the orange bowl by finishing T4 with the aid
of an eagle. He returns this year to defend his title.

This years event will be very competitive with the top
players like the 5 A Class State Championship winner in
Florida, Christopher Maulder and the State Champion of
Texas, Jackson Twyman confirming their participation. There
will be several other newcomers from many golf clubs,
brushing their shoulders with these top contenders. This
years orange bowl championship results will bear major
significance in determining the season end honors like the
Crystal Junior Player of the Year and the All America Junior
teams. Also attending this years event will be the division
coaches of many golf schools spread all over America.

Ramsey Hughes, the spokesperson for the league is a very
excited man as everyone is anticipating record spectator
attendance this time. Ramsey Hughes feels that every one is
looking forward to excellent sportsmanship from all these
young golfers who are going to participate in this years
orange bowl championship. Hughes also adds that all the
youngsters competing are very dedicated and passionate
sportsmen wanting to do their best.

Orange Bowl Jr. Golf Tournament is a brilliant opportunity
for anyone wanting to take his skills a notch up in pressure
situations. Laura Hill, the chairman of the Orange Bowl Jr.
Golf Tournament has thanked all the sponsors and
behind-the-scene people who work extra hard to make sure
that this event turns out to be the best year after year.

Misconceptions About Golf Competitions

There are many people who have misconceptions about golf;
surely these people have never played golf. Golf is a game
that carries a stereotype that it's for older adults, it's
slow moving, provides little exercise, and requires a lot of
money to enjoy. This is simply not true; in fact, in many
cases it's just the opposite.

Since pro golfers tend to be graceful and slow moving some
think that there's not enough competitive spirit. Golf is a
game mixed with competition and patience which may seem like
a contradiction. Some enjoy the sport for the completion
factor, some for the relaxation factor, and most for a mix
of both. Either way, it's a sport that's anything but
boring.

Some people categorize golf with other less popular sports
such as billiards or bowling. Golf has a fan base that is
much bigger and more enthusiastic. In fact, if you've met a
serious golf fan, then you probably know that they are just
as enthusiastic (if not more so) than a baseball or football
fan. Many would be surprised that televised golf tournaments
bring in a lot of viewers, especially the larger
tournaments.

There may not be as many young viewers as other more popular
sports but that is changing. The increase in popularity of
the sport and young pro players such as Tiger Woods has
brought young life to the game. Golf groups and tournaments
have started to cater to junior golfers since they know that
the game can't survive without young blood.

Golf has less exercise involved but it can be more physical
if you choose to walk between swings instead of taking
carts. If you play golf regularly then you're bound to loose
a few pounds just from moving around. Being a less physical
sport is good since the sport doesn't require players to be
in top physical strength. Therefore, those who want to take
up the sport don't have to hit the gym before stepping on
the green.

Golf is a very challenging sport. Not only does it take a
lot of practice, training and knowledge about the game but
no two golf courses are the same so there's always a
challenge.

The game is open to young and old, male and female. It was,
at one time, a sport for those with enough money to afford
the club and green fees but things have changed. With the
popularity of the sport it has become more affordable and
the class distinction is fading away.

Being specifically passionate about golf courses in costa
blanca, Leroy Calstard has been authoring quite a few news
stories on this specific topic. Through his detailed
publications such as

http://www.alicante-spain.com/costa_blanca_golf_courses.html,

the reviewer expressed his know-how on topics associated
with torrevieja golf and denia golf.

Golf Bags: What To Choose

Your golf bag is a piece of golf accessory that allows you
to carry all your other equipment with you such as the
clubs, tees, markers, and perhaps an umbrella or towel. This
piece of equipment doesn't necessarily have direct effects
on your game but may have great influence on your overall
game, comfort and fatigue level.

There are two major things that may affect your choice of
golf bag- the gears that you will put into the bag and the
way you will carry the bag. Are you making use of a caddie
or a golf cart?

To these, there are basically three kinds of golf bags: the
staff bag or the tour bag the travel or carry bag and the
cart bag.

The staff bag or tour bags. The largest selection of golf
bags is staff or the tour bags. They are readily equipped
with enough storage space for 14 standard golf clubs and
have rooms for other golf equipments that are necessary
during the games. Most professional golfers use this type of
golf bags as they always have caddies with them. So they may
often choose to bring as much equipments as they prefer.
Good staff bags are generally made of leather and other
premium materials and are relatively highly priced.

Travel or carry bags. If smaller bags appeal to you and you
are thinking of carrying your own bag, you may chose to have
the travel or the carry bag. Though they may vary in
different forms and sizes, they are rather smaller than the
other golf bags. They are designed purposely to make room
for the basic golf equipments such as limited number of golf
clubs, other small accessories and a number of golf balls.
There are also specialized carry bags for junior golf
players.

The majority of travel bags are made of plastic, nylon and
other lighter materials. There are carry bags that have
added features that may expand the ease of use. Many are
equipped with straps, others appear with stands. These
stands allow players to get their clubs easily.

Cart golf bags. These are relatively smaller than the tour
bags. However, using this kind of golf bag may require the
help of a cart or caddie since it is more bulky than most
tour bags. As the name suggests, cart bags are designed
exactly to be used by golf carts. These have lesser pockets
and are generally made of light materials.

Things to consider when choosing golf bags

- Given that you have a caddie with you, the size and weight
of the golf bag may not necessarily bother you, unless it
has become too heavy for your caddie. The weight specially
won't matter if you are using a golf cart. However, if you
intend to walk around the golf course while carrying your
bag then it would be most ideal for you to choose the
not-so-heavy bag that may contain all the equipments you
need without being bulky. The most ideal in this case is the
carry bag with a stand.

- The first question that would probably arise is " how much
the bag will be". Like with most things, the more money your
pocket may allow you, the more features you may get. You may
buy golf bags for as low as $40 however, prices may reach up
to $500. If your budget is limited, it is best to stick with
a golf bag that has more features than what its price may
earlier suggest. Finding for such may be a painstaking task
but it will after all be for good.

- It is relatively important to take note of the feature of
the bag. If you are normally carrying lot of equipments
during your game, it is recommended for you to buy a bag
that has many side pockets. However, if you prefer to bring
along the most basic gears, lots of pockets may not
necessarily be of the initial requirements.

As mentioned in the beginning of this article, golf bags
don't have direct effects on the outcome of the games. It is
not bad though to get some of the life's pleasures.

California. He publishes articles and reports in various
ezines and provides golf bag resources on

Junior Golf Shoes – Options That You Do Not Know

There are many more options for junior golf shoes than what
you may imagine. You could get these on the net or in your
local sports retailers. What you buy will depend solely on
what the needs are. You will have a lot of options on sizes
as well as color apart from the style of show you are
looking for. Maybe you would prefer to buy sandals, and they
too are available in the junior sizes. There are many
different varieties of shoe types to choose from. For those
with broad legs, you can get the wider type of golf shoes.
On the other extreme, you may buy narrower shoes as well so
you may want to keep the foot breadth in mind when looking
for the perfect golf shoes. As mentioned earlier, the type
of shoes you finally buy will depend on the kind of feet you
are buying them for. Here we will provide more information
on the kinds of golf shoes available on the market today.

Obviously the first thing you will keep in mind is the type
of feet you are buying for. Don't give preference to the
style of the shoe over its quality. For every type of golfer
biomechanics there is a specially designed shoe you can buy.
Feet can be classified into three basic types: neutral,
pronated and supinated. The overpronated foot type need a
shoe that is strongr, supportive and generally firmer.
Oversupinated feet require the use of a more cushioned as
well as flexible shoe type. The type of foot can change over
time as you age. As you grow older your feet tend to become
wider, so you could even buy shoes to suit an older person,
and that is stylish as well. Another aspect of shoes is the
water proof variety. Make sure your child is wearing
waterproof shoes when they are out playing golf. Getting wet
feet can be quite discouraging and the child may start
disliking the game because of this.

So maybe you are wondering if you need to know anything else
about junior golf shoes?

There are many varieties of shoes on the market today, and
do not be carried away with styles and brand names - choose
one that is just right for the feet you are looking to buy
shoes for. Do remember that the shoes best suited to golf
will not only be comfortable but also add a bit of
stability. Uncomfortable feet will never play great golf.
Look at it this way your feet are the pillars of your body,
and when you need to play good golf, you need those pillars
to be as firm and comfortable as can be.

Golf Recruiting 101

Golf is a great game that you can play for the rest of your
life, but you will only have one shot at competing on a
college golf team. In this article I will attempt to lead
you in a direction that will give you the best opportunity
to play golf in a competitive environment in college.

Start Promotion Early

Starting the process early is a huge key to you success in
landing a place to play golf in college. You do not have
wait until you are a single digit handicap golfer to start
contacting college coaches. As a matter of fact you do not
have to be a single digit golfer to compete in college in
some cases.

The top NCAA Division l schools are looking for a 0-1
handicap. Middle to lower Division l schools you need a 2-3
handicap. With a 4-7 handicap you may still land a Dl offer
if other factors like grades are outstanding. With a
handicap of 4-7 you qualify for Dll, Dlll, and NAIA for
sure. With a handicap of 7 or over you can still qualify for
Dlll and NAIA opportunities. There are 279 Division l
colleges that offer men's golf. The good news there are 148
at the Dll level, 242 at the Dlll level and 150 at the NAIA
level. There are 170 Dl schools for women golfers, and 230
at the Dll, Dlll and NAIA schools combined.

You can get a great education at a smaller school where they
focus more on academics then athletics. As a matter of fact
40% of the student body at a smaller school are athletes as
compared to 5% at a big name school. Things are not as
serious at a smaller school when it comes to athletics, so
keep in mind that it may be a better fit for you at a
smaller school.

You will need to put together a Player Profile with all your
contact info, grades, community service, honors, coaches
contact info, a brief bio and a picture. Start contacting
coaches via phone or via email and tell them you are
interested in playing golf for them. If they are interested
they will want more info on you, so there is you opportunity
to send them your Player Profile. You do not need to play
AJGA golf or any other junior tour events to get an offer to
play golf in college at the lower levels. The bigger schools
will more than likely want some national junior competition
under your belt. Don't worry if you don't have a high
ranking if you do play on the junior golf circuit. Remember
there are a lot of smaller schools that would love to have
you, but they just don't know about you. That is why you
need to self promote.

Clearinghouse Registration

If you are good enough to play Dl or Dll college golf you
must register with the Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse at
the end of your junior year at ncaa.org. Make sure you get
The Guide for College Bound Student-Athlete from your
counselor or from the NCAA website.

Academics

Academics can make you or can break you. I does not matter
how great you are, if you grades are not in order you will
not even qualify to play under NCAA requirements. The better
the grades, including your SAT score, the better opportunity
and the more money you will get.

Community Service

Community service and or extracurricular activities are a
big deal. You want to be the triple threat student-athlete.
All things being equal in terms of grades and game the
college coach will "offer" the athlete who has more
community service. Besides there is a lot of money to be had
from the Federal Government that does not have to be paid
back under the "work study" program. How you qualify for a
work study grant is to have a lot of
extracurricular/community service activities. Things like
the arts, music, dance, school government, church
involvement, outside volunteer work and so on. Your list of
community service activities is how the coach judges you
over-all character. After all the college coach doesn't even
know anything about you at this point.

Letter of Recommendation

A letter or recommendation or two will serve you very well
as a potential college golf prospect. Ask anyone of
authority, such as your coach, school counselor, teacher,
pastor/priest, to write a letter of recommendation for you.
I suggest that you send the letter along with your Player
Profile to college coaches.

Keeping In Touch

Once you make contact with a college coach you will need to
stay in touch on a regular basis. I suggest when you are in
season that you communicate weekly results to all coaches
showing interest in you as a potential golf prospect. This
is huge since there are only 4.5 scholarships for men and 6
scholarships for women available per year per school.

Golf Terminology, Staying One Shot Ahead

Golf terminology is what is needed to help you play the game
of golf. If your a beginner, a lot of golf terminology will
go straight over your head. This article will help you to
get to know some of the basic golfing terms, including some
golf etiquette, to help get you on your way.

First on the Tee.

The word 'tee' is used as either as two nouns, or one verb.
The first noun 'tee', is the little wooden stake used to
"tee up" the ball for the first shot on a given hole. The
tee is not compulsory, some golfers prefer not to use one,
but most do as the tee helps the golfer place the ball on a
perfect lie in order to get a clean strike. The second noun,
'tee' indicates the area from which a hole is begun, and is
referred to as 'the tee' area or the 'tee box' which will be
set by different coloured markers indicating the length of
the hole. The verb "to tee" means to set the ball on a tee,
or "tee up" meaning to get started.

Tee Markers.

Tee markers are the objects of a given colour, mounted close
to the ground, that indicate the line beyond which a golfer
may not "tee" the ball up. They are coloured differently to
determine the overall length of the hole, the white tee
marker being the furthest back and is sometimes referred to
as the 'medal tee markers' and is used mainly by the members
and for club competitions. Then there would be the yellow
tee markers, for general use, and further forward would be
the red tee markers for Ladies and or Junior golfers. On
golf courses that also host significant tournaments, there
will be a set of championship tee markers, usually
increasing the lengths of most of the holes by many yards.

Terrain Terminology.

On a par four or par five your ball should ideally land on
the fairway. There is no such 'fairway' on a par three as
you should plan to land your tee shot on the green. The
fairway is the well manicured strip of grass between the tee
and green, the grass is cut very short in order to give you
the perfect lie for your next shot. The ball will be sitting
up nicely-hence "fair" way. Either side of the fairway and
your in the rough, where the grass is allowed to grow that
little bit longer, more known as the intermediate rough.
Beyond the intermediate rough your in all sorts of trouble,
weeds, logs, thickets you name it. Beyond the rough is the
out of bounds. A ball that is out of bounds is out of play.
Some golf holes will have white out of bound markers clearly
marked down one side of the fairway where your ball must not
stray!

That's a nice 'lie'.

In golf, the term 'lie' is describing the position of the
ball at rest. So, when we say the ball is on a perfect lie,
we mean the ball came to rest at the perfect spot. 'Lie' is
less frequently used to refer to the angle formed by the
shaft and the club head in relation to the ball.

Can I take a Mulligan?

A Mulligan is a second chance and is often used in a
friendly game of golf, where everyone is given a Mulligan on
the first hole, or second chance if needed. A Mulligan
doesn't exist in the R&A Rules, also never assume when
playing with a new group that a Mulligan is allowed. Some
more serious golfers, even serious bad golfers, don't
consider them.

Tips.

In deep rough, it's often best to choose the prudent shot
over the most heroic. Think percentage, instead of trying to
thread the ball through a narrow slot between a dozen trees,
turn sideways and punch the ball out of trouble and onto the
fairway. Stand on the opposite side of the ball from the
person preparing to hit, and stand still. Never stand behind
a player when a shot is taken as this is illegal especially
on the putting green.

Golf Etiquette.

Golf etiquette is extremely important to learn, as bad golf
etiquette can land you in a lot of hot water, with golfers
not wanting to partner with you. Good golf etiquette also
helps to keep the flow of the game moving, avoid slow play
at all times. If you pick up a copy of the R&A Rules,
you'll notice that the etiquette section is Section 1. Golf
etiquette isn't incidental; it's essential

First to Play is the One Away.

After all tee shots have been taken, the ball furthest from
the hole is the ball that is hit first. This also applies
when on the green, the ball furthest from the hole putts
first. Never walk over the putting line of another player.
Always attend to the flag if your closest to the hole.

Waving a Faster Group Through.

If a ball from your group strays into the woods, it's always
proper to help your playing partner locate it. Always be
mindful of players behind you, check to see if they're
waiting on the tee, and particularly if they're waiting for
you! You are not allowed to search endlessly for a lost
ball, (five minutes max) you should therefore waive the
players behind through. When you have found your ball, wait
for the golfers you waved through to complete the hole
before continuing. Avoid slow play at all times.

Pace of Play.

Never 'lose' the hole in front. Always strive to keep up
with the players on the hole in front of you. You don't have
to rush, but by adopting good golf etiquette, your game will
flow and proceed more quickly. We all love our golf but
no-one wants a five hour round.

What's your handicap?

The great thing about golf is that with the handicap system,
players of any ability can play a competitive game with one
another. With the handicap system you could even give a pro
a run for their money. A handicap is the shot allowance
given to players depending on their ability. To get an
official handicap you would need to post three cards at your
local course. Your cards would then be analysed to determine
how many shots you are 'allowed' in a round of golf. The
highest for a man is 28 strokes and for a woman the highest
allowance is 36 strokes.

In this article we have covered some of the basic golf
terminology and golf etiquette to get you on a golf course
straight away. There are lot's of other rules, and much more
golf terminology (and you can't possibly know everything
about golf-ever.) However if you play as described in this
article, you'll be fine, and the more you play, the more
golf terminology you will pick up. And you'll also have lots
of happy playing partners.

How To Purchase Junior Golf Equipment For Kids

Most people prefer to shop online nowadays, as it is a very
convenient method of shopping. This theory applies to all
sports persons as well, including those playing golf.
Children who play golf require special golf equipment suited
to their needs. Junior golfers no longer have to use adult
clubs that have been cut down to size. A lot of golfing
equipment is being manufactured keeping a child's body in
mind. This equipment is built differently as compared to
that manufactured for adult players. For example, if the
length of the golf club is not comfortable for the child, it
will affect his game. So also, if the golf club is unduly
heavy, the child will struggle with the swing. Therefore, it
is necessary to purchase the right kind of golf equipment
meant for kids.

Junior golfing equipment can be purchased online for
children who are interested in playing golf. Online shopping
for junior golf equipment can be a great convenience to the
child as well as the parents. It is beneficial since online
research can be undertaken on the subject, including a
comparative study of the prices for various accessories and
golf equipment on offer.

The biggest advantage of online purchase of junior golf
equipment is that it saves valuable time for the parents.
Sport stores are open only during a specific period whereas
virtual malls and stores are open for twenty-four hours a
day. There is no restriction in terms of time, any
individual can purchase the equipment by just logging on to
the Internet whenever he can find the time from his busy
schedule. One need not take out time for a visit to the
sports store just to purchase golfing equipment for kids, or
any thing for that matter. The online stores are willing to
ship the items to any part of the world, so there is a wide
selection available to customers.

Access to a wide variety of golf equipment for children from
the comfort of your home makes it a great shopping
experience. You do not have to drive to the store by wasting
valuable gas; this in turn helps savings. In today's world
of skyrocketing fuel prices, this is a great way to save on
expenses. The consumer wants to save time and money and
online shopping is the best way to achieve this. Shipping
costs may be high, but there are some dealers who offer free
shipping for the junior golf equipment.

Buying golf equipment for juniors online has other
additional benefits too. It is possible to preview the item
that is being considered for the kid in terms of size
specifications, styles and color. Prices offered by various
dealers can be compared and the selection can be made as per
your budget. This facility has made online shopping very
popular and most people prefer this method for its

How to Start Your Kids In Golf

Your kids are getting to the age that they would like to
start to play golf and you are wondering when to start them
in a junior golf instruction program. Knowing when to start
and how to find the right junior golf instruction program
for child are crucial components to building an environment
for your child to enjoy and succeed in the game of golf.

Begin by asking yourself, not your junior, some questions
about what your motivation might be for getting their junior
golf instruction. Four reasons that parents want junior golf
instruction for their young child (under eleven) typically
are:

? Because of golf's reputation for rules, fair play and
self-policing, the parents have a genuine interest in seeing
their children attempt to play the game.

? A babysitting service, parents get a time out from their
kids for a while.

? Parents want to spend more time with their child and have
decided that golf will be the vehicle to do this.

? As so many do, parents feel that their children must be in
as many activities as possible. Whatever your reasons are
for wanting your child to begin to play the game of golf,
the important thing is to ensure the kids have fun and enjoy
themselves. Golf is a great game that can teach your child
many life skills and is a game they can play the rest of
their life.

The most important thing to do is ask your child if playing
golf is something that they would like to do. If the answer
is no, do not push them to play. You do need to make sure
that they understand the option is always open for them to
play. It make take you asking multiple times and giving them
the information they need to feel comfortable to begin a
junior golf instruction program.

Once your child decides that they do want to play golf here
are some steps to take to get them started and to keep the
game fun for them:

? Begin with a real junior set of clubs. Many people think
that by making a club shorter it will fit a junior golfer.
This is NOT true. The weight would still be too heavy for
children. The recommendation I would make is to purchase
from La Jolla Golf or LJC. They specially weight their
junior golf clubs depending on the size of your child. In
addition, you do not need to buy a whole set, you can
purchase these clubs one at a time.

? Find a qualified junior golf instructor. You can contact
your local PGA Section either by phone or online. If a
Certified PGA Professional is available in your area, he or
she would be a good place to start.

? Make sure that your junior golf instruction includes
sessions on the rules of golf as well as golf etiquette.
Depending on their age, the rules and etiquette situations
do not need to be deep in the heart of the rule book. It has
always amazed me on what a child at any age can retain when
they want to learn.

? Your junior does not have to play a "real golf hole" to
have fun. Make the putting green the goal. This is a good
way for the younger junior golfers to get started and as it
reads only count the shots that it takes to get to the green
to determine a score.

? The hole does not need to be the end of the hole. What
does this mean? Some smaller juniors find it more fun to hit
it into a bunker than onto a green. This may seem
counter-intuitive to many golf purists however, once you
think about it, typically the bunkers are smaller than the
putting greens. This can only make them better later. In
addition, they LOVE to climb into the bunkers and this gives
us a chance to teach bunker etiquette.
