Junior and Senior Golf – It’s About the Basics
Providing your child with the right equipment is the first
step to getting the basics right. However, your child still
needs to learn to swing those clubs correctly in order to
perform from the start.
Below are a couple of drills for when you're on the range
with your child. Although this is just a start, both tips
are designed to instill the basics and avoid long-term bad
habits from forming in a junior swing.
THE NATURAL SWING
The biggest secret to a successful swing is to keep it as
natural as possible. A good way to practice this is to tee
up a golf ball as you would when hitting your driver.
However, this time take a pitching wedge and hit the ball
with the club using just your right arm.
By doing this, your arm will react to the natural plane
which is to turn your wrist on follow through. If done
correctly, you will be amazed how long and straight the ball
will fly. Thereafter hold the club lightly with both hands
and swing just as you did with your right arm. Again, allow
the natural movement of your wrists to govern the club.
GET THE PUTTER THROUGH STRAIGHT
This is something that almost all amateur golfers and some
pros struggle with. When practising putting, push your
elbows until they form a triangle with your body.
This will promote a pendulum motion on your backswing and
follow through which will lead to the putter head moving
through the ball straight. The other secret to this method
is to swing the putter back and through calmly without
jabbing at the ball. This will teach you to get a better
feel for the distance of each putt.
If you are struggling with your swing and tend to govern the
club too much, I suggest you also give these drills a go
(swing fundamental drills are NOT just for Juniors). They
could make all the difference to your game.
